Robin Lindley Interviews Dr. Charlotte Jacobs

Interview by Robin Lindley:

I recently spoke with acclaimed author Dr Charlotte Jacobs on her new biography of Setsuko, 90 Seconds to Midnight: A Hiroshima Survivor's Nuclear Odyssey (University of Nebraska Press and Melbourne University Publishing).

In our interview, Jacobs generously recounts how she came to write this biography; Setsuko's haunting story of survival in the midst of Hiroshima's devastation; the horrific aftermath of the nuclear attack; Setsuko's move to Canada; and her rise to become the moral voice of the movement for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Setsuko, as Jacobs notes, is still alive in her nineties and still working for the abolition of all nuclear weapons.

For me, a chilling part of the interview is Dr Jacobs's discussion of how close we've come to dozens of devastating nuclear weapons accidents that could have incinerated cities or entire regions.

Dr Jacobs's timely and inspiring new book should move readers to learn more about the threat of nuclear destruction and to see how one devoted soul can move others to bring change.
